Mental health.
Everybody's talking about it.
Mental health seems to be a growing trend this year, with it being forecasted as one of the trends that will continue to grow throughout 2019 (alongside female empowerment, yay!). Now it seems to be given just as much importance as our physical health, with brands rolling out mental health awareness workshops, businesses becoming more mental health friendly, and movements such as the 'Me Too' movement powering through the headlines.
If you've ever felt depressions grip tightly around your existence or felt the weight of anxiety pinning you down to the confinements of your own home, then you understand mental illness is not simply 'all in your head'.
It can become deeply troubling, isolating and even start to take a toll on your physical health in a number of ways. However, although many have paved the way to have open discussions about mental health, we still seem to be facing major issues within this sector. Statistics show that not only are more people starting to experience mental health disorders from as young as 15, but their conditions worsen by 75% by the age 18. I believe that our work has only just begun.
The NHS reported in The Mental Health of Young People (NHS, 2018) that nearly 20% of young people suffering with mental illness can wait up to 6 months to be seen by a specialist. Whilst trying to navigate your way through some very incredibly powerful emotions, 6 months can really make all the difference between getting better or spiralling down a hole that it is almost nearly impossible to come out from.
But, I truly believe it doesn't have to be this way.
Without getting into too many details, I found myself in a very similar position recently and didn't know quite where to turn. Visiting my GP only made things seem more 'real'. Talking to friends and family only seemed to make them upset. Intoxicants only seemed to mirror putting a plaster on a knife wound. It only worsens the situation.

By luck, I came across the Moodpath app on the Playstore (or Appstore for Apple users). I'd already tried so many different methods of coping with how I felt, what harm could an app possibly do? I quickly downloaded it and vowed to give it a go.
Well, it's safe to say that this app is INCREDIBLE. I am completely blown away by how much this clever little app came to affect me and made all the difference to how I was feeling. Since I've downloaded it, I've driven everybody around me crazy raving about this app. Moodpath was designed with the intention of helping those suffering with depression and anxiety, and boy, did it succeed in its goal.

The app works in three ways.
1. Testing Your Moods
Throughout your day, you'll be asked to 'check-in' with how you're feeling. Giving you plenty of room to write more than simply 'bad' or 'good'. It actually pushes you to give as much information as possible, by asking what's on your mind, how you're feeling and what activity you are doing. You'll be asked to check-in three times a day, and if you'd like to check-in more often, that's okay too.
2. Assessment of Results
After 2 weeks, you will be provided with an electronic doctor letter. This letter will present the findings, your diagnosis and also the key areas you need to work on. This letter is compliant with the healthcare industry guidelines and can be taken to your GP to make that first conversation a little easier.
3. Personalised Experiences
Based on the key issues you are dealing with, you will be given access to more than 150 psychological exercises that will help you better understand your moods and help you start to feel better.
I absolutely cannot recommend this app enough. After using it for two weeks, I've started feeling much better and also learnt how to pinpoint all my triggers and take notice of the things that truly lift my mood. If you still haven't been able to see a specialist, this app will help keep you afloat until you can take the next step.
